Looking For Moving Tips?
At Bennett’s Moving we understand the stress and confusion that moving can cause so we have put together a list to help you prepare and stay focused as your move approaches! Print the .pdf file at the bottom of the page and carry it with you before and after the move. Moving tips that may seem obvious can be easily over looked.
Moving tips
In the interest of saving you money, this list of moving tips has proven extremely helpful in reducing the amount of time and frustration spent on your moving day.
- 1) Whenever possible, move your own pictures, plants, and lamps.
- 2) Unhook appliances, wind up electrical cords and secure hoses.
- 3) Unhook head and foot boards on beds and put the hardware in a place where you can find it.
- 4) Take lampshades off lamps if you want us to move for you.
- 5) Take mirrors off backs of chests and dressers
- 6) Drain excess water from large plants or planters
- 7) Remove shelves from bookcases, put them along side the piece and put the shelf pins in an envelope.
- 8) Pack boxes properly- Make sure they have tops and are sealed. Remember – We are not responsible for the contents of cartons that we don’t pack.
- 9) Label boxes correctly according to where they are going and how fragile they are.
- 10) You and your friends are welcome to bring items out to the truck and to take them from the ground once we get those items off the truck. We are not allowed to have you on the truck.
- 11) Have someone who knows where the items are going to stand by and direct the movers at all times.
- 12) If you have access to a pick-up truck or station wagon, you can transport garden tools, lawn mowers, bikes, skis, etc. In the back without hurting them- where as we must pack them in next to furniture. That takes a bit more time.
- 13) Clean out desks and night stands. These items almost always get turned on there sides in transport. Consider dressers – If they are very heavy, or very delicate, or if they come up or down stairs with turns in them, clean out at least some of the drawers. An extra 10-15 boxes will not add a substantial amount of time to the move.
- 14) A child’s chest, or one that is not heavy, will not have to be emptied.
- 15) Secure all small and lose able items such as jewelry, coins, papers, etc. Put your keys, remote controls and checkbook where you can find them. Try to account for the loose items before the movers arrive.
Tips to Make Moving Easy
Preparing Your Property
- Put cardboard down to protect your floors
- Remove pets or put them in a safe place
- Move vehicles so our crew has easy access to your property
- Disconnect all appliances and drain water hoses from refrigerators and washing machines
- Remove items from drawers so they don’t fall out and the furniture is easy to lift
Pack Your Belongings
- Take time to safely pack your belongings
- Always pack heavier objects on the bottom of boxes and lighter things on top
- Don’t overload boxes or mix delicate items with bulkier objects that could cause damage when the box is shifted
- Label or color code boxes, so movers know where to place them at your final destination
- Include handling instructions so movers know which boxes are fragile or heavy
- Don’t forget to seal boxes with sturdy packing tape
Large Appliances
- Empty, defrost, and wipe down refrigerators and freezers
- Move and store them in the upright position
- Make sure doors are sealed shut
- Have doors removed if they are oversized
*We recommend you have washers and dryers disconnected prior to the move for liability issues. We will move your appliances but do not provide hookup.
Computers and Televisions
- It’s always wise to backup your data prior to moving computers
- Protect your valued electronic devices by placing them in their original or other sturdy boxes with plenty of anti-static paper
- Modern televisions are a real investment. Protect yours by placing them in the original packaging. Our movers will wrap them for you. Most owners’ manuals suggest they be kept upright.
- Take photos of computer and TV cords to help remember how to plug all the devices back together.
Large Frames and Mirrors
- It’s wise to purchase specialty boxes to preserve your large treasured frames, mirrors, and photos.
- We can also wrap some of these items in moving pads.
Beds
- Mattress bags are a good investment to protect beds from getting dirty or wet.
- We can also provide shrink-wrapping.
- Don’t forget to safely store the hardware.
- Our movers will break down beds if you want to avoid the heavy lifting.
Lamps
- Remove shades and bulbs, and wrap the cords.
- We’ll put unwrapped lamps into moving pads.
Housewares
- Pack plates individually in paper dish-pack boxes if possible.
- Fill empty spaces with packing paper to protect items from shifting.
Clothing
- Fold and pack clothes in suitcases, garment bags, or space-saving vacuum seal bags.
- Keep items on hangers and place them in wardrobe boxes, which we sell and rent.
- Don’t drag unwanted items along. Consider donating them to Goodwill or another organization.
Furniture disassembly and assembly
- We can take apart furniture as needed and reassemble it upon arrival at your destination if you’d like.
- Consider calling a non-profit organization to take away unwanted furnishingsItems we can’t move
- By law we aren’t allowed to handle flammable liquids, propane bottles, gas and aerosol cans and oxygen bottles.
- We’d also like to personally take care of items of monetary or sentimental value, including jewelry, trophies, and stamp and coin collections.
